Research Interests

Ali_june2021_small2_edited.jpg

My research aims to help protect biodiversity from global environmental threats, such as land clearing and climate change, using a combination of ecology, mathematics and computer simulations. I am particularly interested in nature reserves, such as national parks, as a conservation tool. I ask: what are the benefits of parks for biodiversity and for human wellbeing? How is wildlife in parks impacting the wellbeing of visitors? How much more area should we protect, and with what wildlife to maximise benefits? Where should we create a national park next? I work to answer these questions and more, under the knowledge that funding for conservation is limited, and with the ultimate aim of protecting as much biodiversity as possible.
